Contemporary developed nations are confronted with the problem of managing their health care systems to assure that patients receive appropriate care for their conditions. The critical objectives now and in the near-term future for the delivery of health services are quality, access and cost containment. This translates to an idealised objective of the consistent and reliable delivery of cost-effective health care with benefits outweighing its risks. Remote service delivery through the use of IT, telemedicine and portable insurance are such technologies that instigate change in health care.
